Sail the Lofoten Islands on your own yacht

Private charter aboard Bavaria 42 Cruiser Ellinor. Bareboat or with local skipper. From May to September, under midnight sun and northern lights.

The experience

Wake up in fjords most travellers only see from the road

The Lofoten archipelago runs 160 kilometres into the Norwegian Sea, a wall of granite peaks rising straight out of the water. From the road you get postcards. From a yacht you get anchorages that no cruise ship or bus tour reaches: the inner arm of Trollfjord at midnight, empty coves under Reinebringen, the fishing hamlet of Å where the road ends and the sea begins.

Ellinor is a Bavaria 42 Cruiser based year-round in Svolvær. She is set up for the cold, clear waters of Nordland with a diesel heater, full cockpit enclosure, radar and modern navigation. Take her bareboat with a valid skipper licence, or sail with our local captain who has spent every summer of the last twenty years in these islands.

Where you can sail

A one-week route through Lofoten

Distances are short. The scenery is not. A typical week covers 80 to 150 nautical miles in mostly sheltered water, with easy day-sails between anchorages.

Day 1 · Svolvær → Skrova
8 nm · easy · fishing village

Handover at the marina in Svolvær, provision and sail across to Skrova, a tiny island community with a working harbour and a swimming beach.

Day 2 · Skrova → Trollfjord → Digermulen
22 nm · one of Norway's iconic fjords

Enter Trollfjord under cliffs 600 metres high, motor to the head, then continue north to a quiet anchorage in Digermulen.

Day 3 · Digermulen → Henningsvær
25 nm · art galleries and cafés

Sail back south to Henningsvær, the "Venice of Lofoten", moored between two islets. Restaurants, bakeries and the famous football pitch on the rocks.

Day 4 · Henningsvær → Nusfjord
28 nm · UNESCO protected fishing village

Long day-sail down the outer coast to Nusfjord, one of the best-preserved 19th-century fishing villages in Norway.

Day 5 · Nusfjord → Reine
14 nm · the postcard shot

A short hop to Reine, spectacular red rorbu cabins under Reinebringen. Optional hike up the ridge for the view every Instagram feed has seen.

Day 6 · Reine → Hamnøy → Ballstad
22 nm · working harbours

Explore the outer villages and turn back east. Anchor or moor in Ballstad, a large fishing port with proper provisions.

Day 7 · Ballstad → Svolvær
24 nm · return

Final sail across Vestfjord back to Svolvær. Handover by early afternoon.

With or without skipper

Bareboat or skippered

If you hold an ICC, RYA Day Skipper, SKS or equivalent, and have coastal experience, you can take Ellinor bareboat. We hand her over in Svolvær, run through the boat and the local pilotage, and you sail. Charter includes full briefing, cruising guide and route recommendations.

If you don't hold a licence, our local captain sails the boat and does the pilotage, or coaches you through it so that by day three you're handling her yourself. He has spent every summer since 2005 in these islands. He speaks English, Norwegian and basic German.
